Minister for Housing, Communities and Integration
Catharina Pieternella Vogelaar was born in Steenbergen (North Brabant) on 23 December 1949.
After completing her secondary education, she studied at De Horst School of Social Work in Driebergen. She subsequently obtained a degree in educational theory at the University of Amsterdam.
From 1972 to 1979 she worked in non-formal education and was deputy director of non-formal education for young people in Gouda. In 1979 she was on the committee of ABOP, the education union of the FNV Trade Union Federation, becoming its president in 1988. In 1994 she became vice-president of the FNV. From 1997 to 2000 she was national process manager for the new system of work and income centres (SWI). She subsequently worked freelance as a consultant/interim manager. From 2000 to 2002 she headed the Civic Integration Task Force project.
Ms Vogelaar has also chaired Boaborea, the professional association for reintegration agencies and safety, health and welfare services, been a member of the Social and Economic Council, and vice-chair of the Central Manpower Services Board. She has sat on the boards of the Dutch Centre for Immigrants, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW) and the Dutch Touring Opera Company, as well as on the Supervisory Board of the Nutrition Centre. Ms Vogelaar has held a number of supervisory posts, including chair of Unilever Nederland BV's supervisory board and member of OxfamNovib's supervisory board.
On 22 February 2007 Ms Vogelaar was appointed Minister for Housing, Communities and Integration in the fourth Balkenende government.
