Frank Heemskerk

Minister for Foreign Trade

Frank Heemskerk was born in Haarlem on 26 July 1969.

After completing his secondary education in 1987 he joined a high school exchange programme and spent a year in Wichita, Kansas. He then went on to study economics at the University of Amsterdam, graduating in 1994.

In 1995 Mr Heemskerk worked as a student counsellor at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Economics and Business and then went to work for ABN AMRO, first as an analyst with the Economics Bureau and Corporate Global Clients, and then as division secretary to the Managing Board. In 2001 he became Vice-President for Institutional Servicing, Middle East at ABN AMRO Asset Management.

From 2003 to 2006 Mr Heemskerk was a member of the House of Representatives of the States General for the Labour Party (PvdA).

On 22 February 2007 Mr Heemskerk was appointed Minister for Foreign Trade in the fourth Balkenende government.
