Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality
Gerritje (Gerda) Verburg was born in Zwammerdam on 19 August 1957.
After completing her secondary education she studied personnel work and labour relations at IJsselpoort Protestant School of Social Work in Kampen from 1976 to 1980.
From 1980 to 1982 she was general secretary of the Protestant Young Farmers Association (South Holland and North Brabant chapters). She then worked for the Construction Workers Union (affiliated to the National Federation of Christian Trade Unions (CNV)), where she was responsible for youth issues. She was chair of the CNV youth organisation until 1990. From 1990 to 1997 she was a member of the committee of the CNV. In 1997 she started up her own business in communications and projects.
Ms Verburg was a member of the House of Representatives of the States General for the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) from 1998 to 2007.
Ms Verburg has also been a member of the Social and Economic Council and the Labour Foundation. She has served on the executive committee of the European Trade Union Confederation, and on the boards of the Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation, the Royal Dutch Equestrian Sports Federation (KNHS) and Stichting Geuzenverzet.
On 22 February 2007 Ms Verburg was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality in the fourth Balkenende government.
