Waddenzee nominated for World Heritage List

News item | 11-12-2007

The Netherlands and Germany are going to work together to get the German-Dutch Waddenzee on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

The Waddenzee is a unique tidal area, with the most extensive system of tidal sand and mudflats in the world. The Waddenzee ecosystem is one of the world's most important international wetland habitats.

A place on the World Heritage List means that the area would be recognised as unique and irreplaceable. This status can help boost economic development and make the region more attractive to tourists, without harming the environment.

The World Heritage Committee will decide in July 2009 whether the Waddenzee should be placed on the List.
