Development minister Bert Koenders has decided to resume some of the Netherlands' development programmes in Pakistan.
The reason for Koender's decision was prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's democratically elected government taking office at the end of March 2008.
When the state of emergency was declared on 3 November 2007, the Dutch government suspended development aid to Pakistan. One of the new prime minister's first decisions was to release the judges who had been under house arrest since last November.
'The new government's actions form a good first step towards restoring the rule of law in Pakistan', said Koenders.
The programmes that will be resumed mainly target education, the environment and good governance. Some are implemented in partnership with the government.
Total resumption of the development relationship will depend on further progress with restoring democracy and the new government's plans.
