On 18 April two Dutch servicemen were killed in Afghanistan when their vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device. One of the soldiers was the son of General Peter van Uhm.
Two other soldiers were seriously injured in the attack. The attack took place approximately twelve kilometres north-west of Camp Holland.
At present there is no reason to believe that Lieutenant Van Uhm was specifically targeted. General Van Uhm assumed command of the Dutch armed forces on 17 April 2008.
Speaking after the Cabinet meeting today, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said that the ministers were greatly dismayed by the report. 'We are all deeply saddened', Balkenende said.
'The soldiers who died in the attack showed great courage and commitment in their work. They deserve our utmost respect. They gave their lives trying to improve the lives of others.'
'Despite the grief and pain we feel today, we will continue along our chosen path with strength and unity', Balkenende said.
