World Bank: more money for small farmers

News item | 14-04-2008

At the Spring Meeting of the World Bank it was decided to invest 800 million dollars in agriculture in developing countries. Minister Bert Koenders is pleased with this result.

According to Development minister Bert Koenders, the current food crisis can only be solved by increasing agricultural productivity and opening access to Western markets for small farmers in developing countries.

Mr Koenders called for an early conclusion to world trade negotiations. 'I have worked for structural solutions. We are witnessing a very serious political and humanitarian crisis,' said Mr Koenders, who was fairly optimistic about the result of the World Bank meeting.

The World Bank also decided to give extra assistance to developing countries, which have been especially badly hit by rising food prices.
