Uniform legal status for MEPs

News item | 21-07-2008

As of 2009 the legal status of members of the European parliament will be regulated at European level. The Netherlands will impose an additional tax on the salaries of the MEPs.

On 7 July 2009 the Statute for the Members of the European Parliament will enter into force, guaranteeing MEPs equal legal status. Under this new arrangement, their salaries will be paid from the Community budget.

At present the individual member states are responsible for the legal status of MEPs. Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Guusje ter Horst will arrange for the necessary legislative amendments to take account of this new situation.

As allowed by the EU, the Netherlands will levy a supplemental tax to offset salary differences between MEPs and members of the Dutch House of Representatives.
