The failure of the seasonal rains has made four and a half million people in Ethiopia dependent on food aid for the next six months. Minister Bert Koenders provides an extra 5 million euros.
The United Nations (UN) needs more than 200 million euros to stave off disaster.
Dutch development minister Bert Koenders has had talks about the emergency in Ethiopia in Geneva and Addis Ababa. 'It is not yet too late to prevent disaster, provided we waste no more time', he said.
Mr Koenders has decided to provide an extra 5 million euros for Ethiopia. Two million euros, given through Unicef, will go to helping 75,000 severely malnourished children.
The Dutch government and other donors have sent a joint letter to the Ethiopian government, asking them to give aid organisations unrestricted access to the drought-stricken areas.
