Government responds to Irish 'no'

News item | 17-06-2008

The Dutch government is disappointed at the outcome of the Irish referendum, but respects the decision of the majority of voters in a fellow member state of the European Union.

The government believes that the Irish should now be given time to reflect on the result.

The Irish 'no' does not mean that the Netherlands and other member states should stop the ratification process.

On 5 June 2008 a broad majority in the Dutch House of Representatives approved the treaty, and it will shortly be debated in the Senate. The government sees no reason to withdraw the bill.

The Treaty of Lisbon will enter into force as soon as all 27 member states have ratified it.
