New boost to agriculture in Uruzgan

News item | 30-06-2008

The development of Uruzgan has been given a new boost with the establishment of a programme to help poor farmers in Uruzgan get access to credit to build up their businesses.

The Netherlands will contribute 6.3 million euros to the Uruzgan Islamic Investment and Financing Cooperative (UIIFC). The programme is expected to be self-supporting within three years' time.

Dutch efforts in Uruzgan focus on the sustainable development of the productive sector (crop cultivation and animal husbandry)- with a view, also, to providing alternatives to poppy cultivation.

Since traditionally many women have worked in animal husbandry, the microcredit programme will also help women to start their own businesses.
