Categorial Protection for Asylum Seekers to be abolished

State Secretary of Justice Nebahat Albayrak proposes to remove the possibility of categorial protection for asylum seekers. All future asylum applications will then only be assessed on individual grounds.

State Secretary Albayrak arrived at this conclusion in her protection policy paper.

The purpose of the Dutch categorial asylum policy is to offer temporary protection to asylum seekers coming from countries where the general situation is extremely serious. This concerns extra protection, offered in addition to the European standards.

In Alabyrak's opinion, the European asylum policy now offers sufficient guarantees to be able to take the general situation in countries of origin into account in assessing whether asylum seekers require individual protection.

This measure will prevent an undesirable magnet effect, and incidences involving fraud.
