The Government is to buy 34 million doses of vaccine against the new influenza A (H1N1) virus, also known as 'swine flu'. Contracts will this week be agreed with vaccine producers.

The vaccine will have to be as effective as possible and ready for distribution as soon as possible. The producers have agreed to deliver it by the end of 2009.

The Health Council of the Netherlands has recommended buying vaccine for the entire Dutch population, including that of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. It has also recommended giving each person two doses, because a single dose does not offer enough protection.
