Under the auspices of the United Nations a high-level conference on the future of Afghanistan will be held in The Hague on 31 March 2009. The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Verhagen, will host the meeting on behalf of the Netherlands.
The conference will be chaired by the UN. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to come to The Hague. Afghanistan and the Netherlands will join the UN in leading the programme for the day.
For Afghanistan the event comes at a crucial moment: in 2009, presidential elections will be held, opening a new chapter in the country's history.
Foreign ministers and representatives of international organisations involved in security and reconstruction operations in Afghanistan will be invited to take part.
