Verhagen concerned about North Korean nuclear test

Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen expressed his concern on 25 May 2009 at reports that North Korea had staged a nuclear test and test-fired several short-range missiles.

Mr Verhagen is in Hanoi, Vietnam, where he is attending the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) of Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

'This is a serious development,' said Mr Verhagen. 'The North Korean regime is recklessly continuing its nuclear arms programme. The timing of these tests shows that the regime had every intention of intimidating the international community.
