European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has announced the portfolio responsibilities for the next Commission. Neelie Kroes has been given the Digital Agenda portfolio and will be one of the vice presidents.
Prime Minister Balkenende said in a press conference following the weekly cabinet meeting that he was looking forward to working with the new European Commission, referring to the new line-up as an 'appealing group'.
Explaining the government's decision to nominate Neelie Kroes for a second
term as commissioner, Mr Balkenende said: 'two issues were important to us:
having a well-qualified candidate and a good portfolio'.
The Digital Agenda portfolio covers digital and economic developments and
consumer issues.
'Ms Kroes is very much looking forward to taking up this task together with
the responsibilities of the vice presidency of the European Commission,' said
Mr Balkenende.
