Government to scale down coffee shops

News item | 11-09-2009

Coffee shops, i.e. establishments permitted to sell cannabis in line with Dutch policy on soft drugs, must be scaled down and must serve only local users.

Scaling down coffee shops will make it possible to tackle the nuisance associated with them and manage crime risks more effectively.

Smaller coffee shops provide a safer environment in which to buy and use cannabis, and their operators have a more personal relationship with their customers. It is hoped that scaling down coffee shops will also reduce the problems that drug tourism causes in border regions.

These are some of the main points of the letter outlining the policy on drugs, which was approved by the Cabinet today.

A number of projects have been devised with a view to establishing a system of small-scale, restricted-access coffee shops.
