Minister Bert Koenders: 'Like NGOs, multilateral institutions must work together more effectively, make results visible, and align their policies more closely with the needs of developing countries.'
This is the conclusion reached by Minister for Development Cooperation Bert Koenders in the policy document 'Working together on global challenges: the Netherlands and multilateral development cooperation', which was submitted to the House of Representatives.
In that document Mr Koenders presents multilateral development cooperation in the context of the food crisis, fragile states and climate policy.
In 2008 the Netherlands contributed about 1.3 billion euros (26% of the development budget) to multilateral institutions, such as UN organisations, international financial institutions (e.g. the World Bank), new global funds and the European Union.
Mr Koenders announced his intention to set aside more money in his budget for multilateral institutions, provided they continue to modernise. They must work together more effectively, make results visible and align their policies more closely with the needs of developing countries: more tailor-made approaches, fewer ready-made answers.
'In the future I would like to evaluate the actions of multilateral institutions and cofinancing agencies more rigorously.'
