Two million euros in emergency aid for Haiti

News item | 13-01-2010

The government is donating an initial amount of two million euros in emergency aid for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. 'This earthquake is a disaster of unprecedented proportions for Haiti', said Development minister Bert Koenders.

'The first news bulletins and pictures show many victims and enormous damage,' Mr Koenders says. 'The situation looks as serious as that in Southeast Asia after the tsunami in 2004. We are looking at what forms of aid are now possible and likely to be most effective.'

Mr Koenders has also decided to send an Urban Search and Rescue Team to Haiti.

The team comprises 60 members, with specially trained sniffer dogs to help search for the thousands of people still buried under the rubble. It is part of the international relief effort which is being led by the UN.
