On 2 December 2009, Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for transport opened a double-layered traffic tunnel below Maastricht. Camiel Eurlings, the Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, and Gerd Leers, Mayor of Maastricht were also present.
