Advice to travellers

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for assisting Dutch nationals abroad, particularly in times of crisis. The ministry issues bulletins about the security situation in various countries. In addition, every Dutch embassy has an evacuation plan to ensure that Dutch nationals can be repatriated in the event of an emergency.

Travel advice

The ministry's travel advice is compiled by the Dutch embassy in the country concerned. The embassies themselves issue recommendations in consultation with the embassies of other EU member states to ensure that all European countries give roughly the same advice.

The advice is updated as frequently as necessary, depending on developments in any given region. All current bulletins are posted on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Evacuation plans

Every Dutch embassy has an evacuation plan to ensure that Dutch nationals can be evacuated in case of emergency. An evacuation plan comprises four stages:

  • First, Dutch nationals are advised to be extra vigilant and to register at the embassy.
  • Second, they are advised to leave the country, if only temporarily.
  • Third, all those who remain, including embassy staff, are called up to meet at certain agreed locations.
  • Here, they await actual evacuation (stage 4). At this stage, the embassy closes down.

It should be clearly understood that all Dutch nationals abroad are responsible for their own safety. People must decide for themselves whether they really need to travel to or remain in countries which are considered unsafe.
