Export, import and customs

Import duties usually have to be paid on goods brought into the Netherlands from outside the European Union (EU).

Companies sometimes smuggle goods into the EU to avoid paying import duties. Such goods include cigarettes (both genuine and counterfeit) and expensive watches. Illegal products can be dangerous to health and infringe trademark law. Customs therefore carries out strict checks on such goods.
