HARC Team Rotterdam find 2500 kilos of cocaine; five men arrested
The HARC (Hit And Run Container) Team, a cooperation of the Seaport Police, Customs and the Fiscal Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD) have found 2500 kilos of cocaine in a container that had been imported with a seagoing vessel from Ecuador. The illegal drugs were hidden in boxes between boxes with tinned peaches.
The HARC Team caught wind of the container after a tip-off. On 12 June, the container arrived in the port of Rotterdam. Subsequently Customs drug detector dogs were sent to the container. When they started barking, the container was scanned, after which the boxes with illegal drugs were found.
The investigation then led to five suspects. Four of them could be arrested in The Hague on 23 June. Shortly before the arrests, one of the suspects had been beaten up by the others. The man was slightly injured. These are four men from The Hague, Rijswijk and Zoetermeer aged 40, 50, 56 and 59. The four were brought before the Examining Magistrate on Monday and remanded in custody.
The fifth suspect, a 32-year old inhabitant of Amsterdam, was arrested at his domicile on Tuesday. He will be brought before the Examining Magistrate on Friday. The cocaine has a wholesale value of more than 80 million euros and has meanwhile been destroyed.
