Prosecution in the case of the incident involving Hr. Ms. Tromp

This is the text of the letter Minister Opstelten of Security and Justice sent to the Lower House on Friday afternoon on 15 April.

Soldiers of the Hr. Ms. Tromp were fired at with firearms from a hijacked Iranian ship on 2 April 2011. Sixteen Somali suspects were subsequently detained and transferred to the Hr. Ms. Tromp.

The Public Prosecution Service will prosecute nine of the sixteen Somali suspects in the Netherlands for firearm violence against Dutch soldiers and piracy. The decision to prosecute in the Netherlands was prompted in part by the demonstrable Dutch interest in this case, namely the serious use of force against Dutch citizens.
