Ships are regularly attacked by pirates in the coastal waters of Somalia and the surrounding area. Various countries have deployed navy ships to the area in order to protect sea lanes and maritime trade against piracy. The Netherlands is one of the contributing countries.
Dutch contribution to Somalia
Up until December 2012, the Royal Netherlands Navy will supply four ships for the EU’s Operation Atalanta and NATO’s Operation Ocean Shield. These are counterpiracy operations taking place off the coast of Somalia.
