The Netherlands provides a container scanner for Palestinian customs inspections

Following requests to foreign minister Uri Rosenthal from Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the Netherlands is to provide a container scanner to help the Palestinian Territories import and export goods.

The scanner will be placed at the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge border crossing between the Palestinian Territories and Jordan. By facilitating imports into and exports from the Palestinian Territories, it will help the Palestinian economy grow while also contributing to Israeli security. ‘Prosperity and security are two key elements of my policy,’ say Mr Rosenthal. ‘They go hand in hand here.’

The requests from Israel and the Palestinian Authority were discussed by prime minister Mark Rutte and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu during the latter’s recent visit to the Netherlands. Mr Rutte and Mr Rosenthal had also discussed the issue with the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and prime minister Salam Fayyad.
