Rosenthal underscores importance of internet freedom in Azerbaijan
Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal spoke today with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov, on the importance of freedom of expression – and in particular internet freedom – in Azerbaijan. ‘The rule of law and respect for human rights are in everyone’s interests, and they also benefit trade and the economy,’ said Mr Rosenthal.
Azerbaijan is part of the Caspian region, which is vital for Europe’s energy supplies. It was a member of the UN Security Council in 2012 and 2013. The Netherlands has maintained diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan since it became independent 20 years ago.
Mr Mammadyarov is in the Netherlands for the official opening of the new embassy building in The Hague.
Mr Rosenthal and Mr Mammadyarov also spoke at length about regional and security questions, including the situation in Syria, Iran and Afghanistan. Mr Rosenthal expressed his concern at the rising tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Several people were killed in border incidents last week. He called on both countries to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
