When a child is born, the parents must do a number of things. This includes registering the birth in the register van de burgerlijke stand (Register of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Civil Partnerships) within 3 days. The municipality will then issue a birth certificate. You are free to choose your child’s first name(s). You can use either the father’s or the mother’s last name.
