The Netherlands is encouraged by recent decisions and announcements by the Ethiopian government. Lifting the State of Emergency early, as well as the continued release of prisoners and the decision to drop charges against individuals and media organisations are tangible, concrete steps by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his government towards a more inclusive Ethiopia with greater political freedom.
We further welcome the announcement that Ethiopia wants to fully accept and implement the Algiers Agreement, as well as the ruling of the Ethiopian-Eritrean Boundary Commission. When implemented, this will pave the way for normalization of the bilateral relations with Ethiopia's neighbor Eritrea and can provide a major contribution to regional stability.
As a longtime partner, the Netherlands stands ready to support Ethiopia on its reform path.
