After graduating, Ms Visser joined the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service/Economic Investigation Service of the Tax and Customs Administration as a senior policy officer. From 2006 to 2010 she worked as an executive business consultant for Atos Consulting NV.
In 2010 Ms Visser was appointed member of the municipal executive for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in Zaanstad. She became a member of the House of Representatives in 2012.
On 26 October 2017 Barbara Visser was appointed State Secretary for Defence in the third Rutte government.
Party political positions and outside activities
Barbara Visser was a member of the Zaandam municipal council for the VVD from 2006 to 2010. For part of the same period she also served as leader of the VVD group, and headed the list of VVD candidates in the 2010 municipal elections. She has also served as a member of the advisory committee to the Monet Foundation in Zaandam and as a member of the board of Stichting Amsterdam 2013, which coordinated various events promoting the city of Amsterdam and marking historical milestones.
