Career

Hans Vijlbrief began working at the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 1992, holding a range of positions. In 1998 he became part-time director of the Research Centre for Financial Economic Policy at Erasmus University, Rotterdam. In 1999 he became vice-director of the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.

He returned to the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2001, first as director of the General Economic Policy Department and, from 2004, as Director-General for Economic Policy. In 2010 he became Director-General for Energy, Telecommunications and Markets, before moving on to the Ministry of Finance as Treasurer-General from 2011 to 2018. In January 2018 he became chair of the high-level working group in Brussels which prepares the monthly Eurogroup meetings.

On 29 January 2020 Hans Vijlbrief was appointed State Secretary for Finance - Tax Affairs and the Tax Administration in the third Rutte government.

Party political positions and outside activities

Dr Vijlbrief has held a range of positions relating to outside activities. From 2000 to 2010 he was an endowed professor in economic policy at VU Amsterdam and co-authored the election manifesto of the D66 political party for the 2017 general election. From 2018 until his appointment to government he was an endowed professor in European economic and financial policy at the University of Amsterdam.
