Raymond Knops held various positions as an officer with the Ministry of Defence/Royal Netherlands Air Force between 1995 and 2000. From 1999 to 2005 he was deputy mayor and a member of the municipal executive of Horst aan de Maas (known as ‘Horst’ prior to 2001).
From October 2004 to February 2005 he was deployed to Iraq as a policy adviser, as part of the military staff of the Dutch battlegroup commander of SFIR 5.
Mr Knops was a member of the House of Representatives almost continually from 2005. He has at various times been a member of the Presidium and of the Permanent Parliamentary Committees on Foreign Affairs, Finance, European Affairs, Defence, Economic Affairs and the Interior.
On 26 October 2017 Raymond Knops was appointed State Secretary for the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the third Rutte government.
Party political positions and outside activities
Raymond Knops has been a board member of the Netherlands Atlantic Association, a member of the general board of the ‘Onze Luchtmacht’ air force society and Chair of the Defence and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
