Ms Van Ark began her career in 1998 with Panfox BV, where she worked as a designer/consultant. In 2000 she joined StBC Consulting as a consultant. Two years later she was appointed team leader at the municipal Social Affairs and Employment Department in Rotterdam (Feijenoord district).
In 2004 Ms Van Ark was appointed member of the municipal executive in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and, as of 1 January 2010, in Zuidplas (following the merger of the municipalities of Moordrecht, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Zevenhuizen-Moerkapelle). In June 2010 she became a member of parliament for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), with responsibility for the Exceptional Medical Expenses Act/Social Support Act. She became deputy parliamentary party leader in 2012.
On 26 October 2017 Tamara van Ark was appointed State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment in the third Rutte government.
