Portugal takes over EU presidency from Germany

On Monday 1 July, Portugal took over the EU presidency from Germany, which held it during the first half of 2007.

During the Portuguese presidency, an Inter-governmental Conference will take place to draw up a new treaty based on the results of the European Council held under the German presidency on 21 and 22 June 2007. The Portuguese presidency will also devote attention to immigration from North Africa and the Lisbon strategy (aimed at strengthening Europe’s knowledge economy). The new presidency’s environmental goals include improving energy efficiency and promoting the use of biofuels.
