Verhagen: Japan must stop whaling now
The Dutch government will urge Japan to put an immediate stop to whaling for scientific purposes, the Dutch foreign minister, Maxime Verhagen, announced on Tuesday in response to questions in the House of Representatives.
“The Netherlands is against whaling”, Mr Verhagen told the House, “and that includes whaling for scientific purposes”. As a member of the International Whaling Commission, the Netherlands is lobbying for new, improved and binding agreements. In its efforts to prevent whaling, the government seeks to bring all catches under the control of the Commission.
