‘Russia must address criticism of electoral process,’ says Verhagen

‘The Netherlands hopes that the Russian authorities will take seriously the objections raised against the running of the election,’ said foreign minister Maxime Verhagen in response to the Russian parliamentary election on 2 December.

The Netherlands also expects Russia to cooperate fully with international observer teams during its presidential election on 2 March 2008.

The Netherlands has already expressed its disappointment at the very small number of international observers present during the parliamentary election. Of those observers, the representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe criticised the lack of equal opportunities for all the parties that took part in the electoral campaign.
