Rosenthal proposes EU measures against Syria

Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal has praised the courage of anti-government demonstrators in Syria. He has also called on the Syrian authorities to stop using violence immediately and to listen to the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.

Mr Rosenthal believes that action must be taken and has therefore proposed that the EU:

  1. suspend its aid programme to Syria and freeze the Syria-EU Association Agreement,
  2. prepare sanctions against the Syrian regime and introduce an arms embargo,
  3. put Syria on the agenda of the UN Security Council and Human Rights Council, and
  4. prevent Syria from being re-elected to the Human Rights Council.
