Fifty years of diplomatic relations with South Korea

The Netherlands and South Korea have maintained diplomatic relations for 50 years. To mark the occasion, the Netherlands will receive a special envoy of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

The special envoy, Ms Park Geun Hye, will deliver a letter of congratulations from the President of South Korea to Queen Beatrix. Ms Park will also speak with the Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, Maxime Verhagen, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Uri Rosenthal.

Relations between the Netherlands and South Korea are close. In 2010, trade between the two countries was worth €5.11 billion. Dutch exports to South Korea amounted to €1.87 billion, and its imports to €3.23 billion. After China, South Korea is the Netherlands’ largest export market in Asia. The Netherlands is South Korea’s third largest trading partner in the European Union.

On President Lee’s behalf, Ms Park is also visiting Greece and Portugal, two countries with which South Korea has also maintained diplomatic relations for 50 years.
