State Secretary Teeven wants to lease Tilburg prison to Belgium for longer
State Secretary Teeven (Security and Justice) wants to lease the penitentiary institution (PI) in Tilburg to Belgium for one more year, up until 31 December 2013. This is his response to a request from the Belgian Minister of Justice, Ms Turtelboom. However, a number of i's still have to be dotted with regard to the lease conditions.
Tilburg houses around 650 Belgian detainees. This detention capacity is currently not required in the Netherlands. Leasing the prison for an extra year means this capacity does not have to be cut. The penitentiary institution in Tilburg offers 481 jobs.
It has been leased to Belgium since 1 February 2010. The treaty that the Netherlands and Belgium signed on 31 October 2009 provided for a lease period of three years, with the option of extending this period by one year. Belgium now wants to invoke this option. Prison sentences are enforced according to the provisions of Belgian law. The prison is also run by a Belgian governor. However, the Netherlands is responsible for managing the institution and provides the staff.
