Ploumen seeks more elbow room for civil society
Development organisations and the government need to create a clearer division between their roles. Foreign trade and development cooperation minister Lilianne Ploumen discussed the matter on Thursday with civil society organisations gathered in The Hague for the annual ambassadors’ conference.
Ploumen wants to continue supporting civil society organisations: ‘Transparent, representative and innovative NGOs are vital’. She will meet with development organisations in the months ahead to discuss future cooperation and the financial model that goes with it.
According to the minister, we need to start collaborating more strategically, spend less time ironing out tensions and give more freedom to NGOs. ‘Civil society is a partner here but not a dependent implementer of my policy,’ said Ploumen.
