Frans Timmermans meets Surinamese counterpart Winston Lackin

Minister of Foreign Affairs Frans Timmermans today spoke with Surinamese foreign minister Winston Lackin. The meeting at the EU-Latin America summit in Santiago de Chile was the first ministerial contact between the Netherlands and Suriname since 2010.

‘One-and-a-half million people in the Netherlands and Suriname share some kind of direct ties with each other. Our countries are inextricably linked through their people, culture, language and history. And since these things are more important than political differences, the Netherlands will continue to strive for good relations between our two countries,’ Frans Timmermans said on Friday after meeting Mr Lackin.

‘But it is also clear that political differences exist between the Netherlands and Suriname, including on such matters as the amnesty law and the December Murders trial,’ Mr Timmermans added.

Mr Timmermans and Mr Lackin agreed to meet again later this year.
