New Dutch special envoy to Syria
Ambassador Marcel Kurpershoek today took up the post of special envoy to Syria.
From his base at the Consulate-General in Istanbul he will liaise with Syrian opposition groups, authorities and fellow envoys in the region. In his new role, Mr Kurpershoek will provide extra eyes and ears for the minister and ministry in the Netherlands. Tomorrow he will speak with his British and French counterparts.
Mr Kurpershoek most recently served as the Dutch ambassador to Poland, and previously to Turkey and Pakistan. He is fluent in Arabic and has written various publications on the region. He replaces diplomat Janet Alberda, who this summer joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Middle East Division.
