The Netherlands Partner Country at BioFach 2015
The Netherlands will be a partner country for BioFach 2015, to be held in Nuremberg from 11 to 14 February 2015. The announcement was made today by Dutch Minister for Agriculture Sharon Dijksma during her visit to BioFach 2014. “German and Dutch consumers are increasingly choosing organic products. Dutch exports in organic products already exceed 900 million Euros, with half exported to Germany,” the Minister said. “Being the partner country at BioFach 2015 will give the Dutch organic sector an even better opportunity to attract the attention of German and other European customers.”
Largest Trade Fair
BioFach is the largest trade fair in Europe for organic agriculture. This year the fair celebrates its 25th edition with around 85 Dutch organic businesses taking part. During her visit Minister Dijksma paid a special visit to the Dutch pavillion and its participants. The Minister also spoke at a round table with the theme “Improvements in quality assurance and regulations required for healthy growth of the organic sector”, stressing the importance of innovation within the sector and maintaining consumer trust.
Organic sector booming in the Netherlands
The organic sector has shown strong growth in recent years. Currently around 1650 organic businesses are producing on more than 55,000 hectares of agricultural land. About 1700 businesses process or trade in organic products, providing work for a total of around 10,000 people. For several years now we have seen a double digit increase increase in turnover year on year and the sector is now worth around 2 billion Euros.
