USAR.NL to provide emergency assistance and support in St Maarten
The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has decided to send a full-strength USAR.NL (Urban Search and Rescue) team to St Maarten, which has been badly hit by hurricane Irma. The team, comprising 59 members, will help coordinate emergency aid efforts, offer humanitarian assistance and support the island’s civil emergency services.
The USAR.NL team of professionals includes search and rescue workers, doctors and nurses, structural engineers, auxiliary personnel and managers. The team has demonstrated the great value of its expertise in the past, following earthquakes in Morocco, Pakistan, Haiti and Nepal. The focus of its upcoming mission will differ somewhat in that it will be concentrating more on providing emergency assistance and less on searching for victims.
The team will fly out from Eindhoven on Monday 11 September on a military aircraft bound for Curaçao, travelling on to St Maarten as soon as possible.
