St Maarten Reconstruction Fund
Following the damage caused by hurricane Irma, the Netherlands is prepared to set up a fund for the reconstruction of St Maarten.
In order to ensure that this money will be used appropriately and to safeguard the integrity of any decisions taken, the Netherlands has set out two conditions:
- St Maarten will set up an Integrity Chamber to promote sound, transparent and reliable public administration.
- The Royal Military and Border Police (KMAR) and Dutch customs officials will assume responsibility for border controls on St Maarten, under the authority of St Maarten’s Minister of Justice.
These conditions are set out in a letter from Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Ronald Plasterk to the government of St Maarten.
