Building supplies delivered to St Eustatius and Saba
In recent weeks cargo ships have delivered building supplies to St Eustatius and Saba. The materials are to be used to repair homes that were destroyed or badly damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria two months ago.
A great deal of homes lost their roofs or had their roofs damaged, and temporary tarpaulins are currently being used to protect against the elements. The consignments consist primarily of wood, zinc and other metals. The island governors of both islands will oversee distribution.
Homes on St Eustatius will be repaired or reconstructed in phases, with materials being allocated to the most badly damaged homes – of which there are around 12 – first. The supplies are being transported at the request of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, which is responsible for coordinating emergency assistance and reconstruction efforts for St Maarten, Saba and St Eustatius.
