Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert to become UN envoy for Iraq

The United Nations has today announced that Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert is to become the new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

This UN special political mission is one of largest of its kind. As Special Representative, Ms Hennis will lead UN activities in Iraq and be responsible for the mission’s operational and political management.

Ms Hennis will begin her role in the autumn, taking over from Slovakia’s Ján Kubiš who has held the post since 2015. She is the second Dutch UN Special Representative for Iraq, following Ad Melkert who served in the role from 2009 to 2011.
