Official Cabinet response on the outcome of the Urgenda procedure
For the Dutch government the Urgenda procedure is not about climate policy. Instead it is about the basic question whether it is legitimate for an independent legal court to judge on government policy and in doing so change that policy. And thus, it is a fundamental debate. The government will now study the outcome of this procedure, regarding a possible appeal with the Dutch Supreme Court.
A possible appeal by the Dutch Government will not interfere with the execution of the The Hague Court of Appeal’s verdict made today. The Dutch government is fully committed to execute this verdict.
In any case, the Dutch Government remains dedicated to achieving the goals that were set out in the National Energy Agreement. According to the most recent insights of The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) the objective of 25 percent carbon emissions reduction in 2020, compared to 1990, is feasible. In the spring of 2019 the PBL will deliver its updated prognoses.
