Commemorative Medals for Peacekeeping Operations awarded
In recognition of their contribution to peacekeeping operations across the globe, 21 police officers, 12 members of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and 10 civil experts were awarded the Commemorative Medal for International Missions today.
A total of 43 medals were presented by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sigrid Kaag, by Police Chief Erik Akerboom, by Lieutenant General Onno Eichelsheim, Deputy Chief of the Netherlands Defence Staff, and by Lieutenant General Hans Leijtens, Commander of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
Today's event at the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague marked the 11th consecutive year that the commemorative medals have been awarded during a joint ceremony. The decorated personnel contributed to greater security and stability in such countries as Mali, Ukraine, Kosovo, Somalia and Afghanistan. There, their duties included tackling cross-border organised crime, reinforcing local government institutions and establishing the rule of law.
All children aged 15 and under of the decorated individuals were awarded a children's medal in recognition of their support back home.
