Foreign minister Koenders on the US Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement
'I am saddened by this decision. It represents a cardinal mistake that is damaging to citizens around the world, including those of the United States. After years of negotiations that led to a good and workable agreement, this feels like a slap in the face for many here in New York and at the United Nations. As such, I see no desire for renegotiation here.
I hope the US will now not further isolate itself. The clean energy transition must continue and the Netherlands, along with the rest of the world, will keep working towards to this goal.
The Netherlands remains firmly committed to the climate agreement. And we are not alone. This became clear at the G7 meeting, where six big industrial countries pledges their unqualified support for climate action. The change that was initiated in Paris in 2015 cannot be stopped. Reaching the goals of the Paris agreement without the participation of the US will be difficult. But not impossible.'
